Food brings people together. Communal exchange and participation keep a neighborhood pulsating. This urban intervention uses food and the language of food to invite people to gather and participate in various forms of exchange.
As the site is an underutilized, neglected space along a Chicago neighborhood street, the intervention is inspired by the iconic street food vendor carts that animate urban streetscapes. These human-scaled hubs invite passersby for a bite and create an attraction for the neighborhood. In the absence of an actual vendor, what if anyone in the community could become an impromptu ‘vendor’ and host an event to encourage communal participation and exchange? This urban object provides a ‘stage’ for a spontaneous ‘vendor’ to host an event: a bake sale, a lemonade sale, a puppet theater performance, a communal workshop…
